How to convert HEIC to PNG
- Drop your HEIC photos into the box above, or tap Choose files. PNG is already selected.
- Wait a moment while each photo is converted on your device.
- Download each PNG, or Download all as a ZIP.
PNG or JPG?
PNG is lossless: every pixel is kept exactly, which is useful for editing, design work or when an app insists on PNG. The trade-off is size — a PNG is often 5–10 times larger than a JPG.
For sharing or uploading to websites, JPG is usually the better choice. Switch the format to JPG above, or use our HEIC to JPG converter.
Why your iPhone photos are HEIC
Since iOS 11, iPhones and iPads save camera photos as HEIC by default (Settings → Camera → Formats → High Efficiency). HEIC stores a photo in roughly half the space of a JPG of similar quality, which is great on the phone but awkward elsewhere: many Windows programs, older Android phones, websites and print services cannot open it.
If you would rather not deal with HEIC at all, switch that setting to Most Compatible and the camera will save JPG from then on. Photos you have already taken stay HEIC.
When PNG is the right output
For most people, JPG is the practical choice. PNG makes sense when:
- You will edit the photo in several sessions and do not want detail to wear away with every save.
- You are cutting the subject out to remove the background — the result needs a format with transparency, and starting from PNG avoids an extra JPG step.
- A design tool, game engine or printing workflow asks for PNG specifically.
- You want an archive copy that will not change, no matter how often it is opened and re-saved.
Size: what to expect
HEIC is very compact and PNG is not, so expect a big jump. As a rough guide for a 12-megapixel iPhone photo:
| Format | Approximate size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| HEIC (original) | 1.5–3 MB | Small, but limited compatibility |
| JPG at quality 92 | 3–5 MB | Opens everywhere |
| PNG | 15–25 MB | Lossless copy of the decoded photo |
Busy scenes such as foliage or crowds sit at the top of these ranges; plain walls and skies at the bottom. If a PNG is too big to send, reduce its pixel size with the image resizer, or go for JPG instead.
What about Live Photos?
A Live Photo is a still HEIC plus a short video clip saved next to it. This tool converts the still image; the video part is a separate file and is not included.
Frequently asked questions
Is HEIC to PNG conversion lossless?
The PNG keeps every pixel decoded from the HEIC file, without any extra compression. (HEIC itself is a compressed format, so the PNG is exactly as good as the original photo.)
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?
HEIC uses very efficient compression; PNG stores pixels without lossy compression. A 2 MB HEIC can easily become a 15–20 MB PNG.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Conversion runs in your browser on your own device.
Can I convert many HEIC files at once?
Yes. Select or drop as many as you like; they are converted one by one and can be downloaded together as a ZIP.
Will the PNG be upright?
Yes. The orientation stored by the camera is applied, so the PNG is not sideways in apps that ignore rotation tags.
How do I get HEIC files off my iPhone without them turning into JPG?
AirDrop to a Mac keeps HEIC. On Windows, the Photos/Files transfer may convert automatically depending on Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC: “Keep Originals” gives you HEIC.
Can I convert HEIC to PNG on the iPhone itself?
Yes. Open this page in Safari, tap Choose files, pick photos from your library, and save the PNG files to Files.
Is there a quality setting for PNG?
No. PNG is lossless, so the only choice is the format itself. If you switch the format to JPG, a quality slider appears.
