How to convert PDF to PNG

  1. Drop your PDF into the box above, or tap Choose PDF files.
  2. PNG is already selected. Pick a resolution — higher keeps fine text sharper.
  3. Download single pages, or Download all as a ZIP.

PNG or JPG for PDF pages?

PNG is lossless, so text edges, lines and charts stay perfectly crisp — ideal for documents, slides and diagrams you will edit or zoom. PNG files are larger; for photos or quick sharing, PDF to JPG gives smaller files.

Where PNG pages work best

PNG stores every pixel exactly. That matters for the kind of PDF content made of sharp edges rather than photos:

Using PDF pages for OCR

If the goal is to run text recognition (OCR) on the images, PNG is the safer input, because compression artefacts around letters can confuse recognition. Print (300 dpi) is the resolution commonly recommended for OCR; for large, clear type High (216 dpi) is usually enough.

Keep in mind that the PNG itself contains no text layer — the words are pixels until an OCR program reads them.

File size: what to expect

Lossless compression works by finding repeated patterns. A page of plain text on white compresses well; a page covered in photos or gradients does not, and can easily be several times larger as a PNG than as a JPG.

Resolution makes a bigger difference than you might expect: going from Standard (144 dpi) to Print (300 dpi) roughly doubles the width and the height, so the page has about four times as many pixels. Choose the lowest resolution that still reads well for your purpose.

Pages are rendered onto a white background, so the PNG files are not transparent. If you need a transparent image of a logo from a PDF, you will need an editor that can remove the background afterwards.

Pasting pages into documents and slides

A PNG page dropped into Word, Google Docs, Keynote or PowerPoint keeps its lines and lettering clean when the slide is projected or the document is exported again. Two tips make it look neat:

For a printed handout the rule of thumb is simple: an image printed at the same dpi it was rendered at comes out at the original page size. A PNG rendered at 300 dpi prints as a full-size, sharp A4 or Letter page.

Frequently asked questions

Is PDF to PNG lossless?

The rendered page is saved without lossy compression, so nothing is blurred by compression.

Why are the PNG files large?

Lossless images of full pages at high resolution contain a lot of pixels. Choose standard resolution or JPG for smaller files.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser on your own device.

Which resolution should I use for slides?

At Standard (144 dpi) a PowerPoint widescreen slide becomes 1920 × 1080 pixels, which suits screens and documents. Use High if people will zoom in.

Can I convert the PNG files to JPG later?

Yes. Use our PNG to JPG converter if a website or app does not accept PNG, or if the files are too large.

Does this extract the original pictures embedded in the PDF?

No. It renders each whole page as you would see it in a reader, including text and margins. To get one picture out of a page, crop it from the PNG afterwards.

Does PNG make blurry PDF pages sharper?

No. PNG avoids adding new blur, but it cannot add detail that is not in the PDF. A low-resolution scan stays low-resolution.
