How to convert WebP to PNG

  1. Drop your WebP files into the box above, or tap Choose images.
  2. PNG is already selected, so transparency is kept automatically.
  3. Download each PNG, or Download all as a ZIP.

WebP to PNG or WebP to JPG?

Choose PNG for logos, icons, stickers and anything with a transparent background or sharp text — PNG keeps every pixel and the transparency.

For ordinary photos, JPG gives a much smaller file.

Keeping transparency intact

A lot of WebP images on the web are cut-outs: product photos on a clear background, logos, emoji-style stickers and UI icons. In WebP the transparent pixels are stored with an alpha channel. PNG supports exactly the same kind of alpha channel, so the conversion keeps soft edges and semi-transparent shadows as they are — not just fully transparent or fully solid pixels.

This is the main reason to pick PNG over JPG here. JPG has no alpha channel at all, so the same image would be flattened onto white.

Typical uses

Will the PNG be bigger?

Usually yes. WebP compresses far more efficiently than PNG, so a 60 KB WebP can easily become several hundred KB as PNG — more for photographic images, less for simple flat graphics. The picture itself does not change.

If size matters more than transparency, convert to JPG. If you need transparency and a small file, keep the WebP for the web and only use the PNG where WebP is not accepted.

Checking that the background really is transparent

Some images only look transparent: a grey-and-white checkerboard pattern has been painted into the picture itself. Converting will not change that — the checkerboard is real pixels. Open the result on a dark background (or the preview in this tool) to check. A genuinely transparent area shows the background behind it.

Lossy WebP in, lossless PNG out

WebP comes in two flavours. Lossless WebP is a pixel-perfect format, like PNG; lossy WebP throws away detail the way JPG does. You cannot tell which one you have from the file name. Either way, the PNG you get is an exact copy of what the WebP decodes to — so a lossless WebP becomes a perfect PNG, and a lossy one keeps whatever slight softness it already had. Nothing is lost in the conversion, and nothing is gained.

That matters if you are going to scale the image up. Enlarging a small, lossy WebP icon will look blurry no matter which format you save it in; for a crisp large version, look for an SVG or a bigger original from the same source.

Frequently asked questions

Does WebP to PNG keep transparency?

Yes. Transparent areas stay transparent in the PNG.

Is it lossless?

The PNG keeps every pixel of the decoded WebP exactly, without further compression.

Can I convert animated WebP?

Only the first frame is converted, because PNG is a still-image format.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser on your device.

Are semi-transparent shadows kept?

Yes. PNG stores the full alpha channel, so partial transparency is preserved, not just fully clear areas.

Will the PNG be the same size in pixels?

Yes. The image is saved at its original width and height.

Can I convert a folder of WebP icons at once?

Yes. Drop all of them together and use Download all to get one ZIP.

Does the PNG keep the photo’s metadata?

No. It is written from the pixels only, so any EXIF information inside the WebP (camera, date, location) is not carried over.

Can I turn the PNG back into WebP later?

Yes. The image converter on this site can save PNG as WebP again, keeping the transparency, in browsers that support creating WebP such as Chrome and Edge.
