How to convert an image
- Drop your images into the box above, or tap Choose images. Different formats can be mixed.
- Pick the format you need — JPG, PNG or WebP — and, for JPG or WebP, a quality.
- Download each file, or Download all as a ZIP.
Which format should I choose?
JPG works everywhere and keeps photos small — the safe choice for uploads, email and printing shops.
PNG is lossless and keeps transparent backgrounds — best for logos, screenshots and graphics with text.
WebP is the modern web format: about 25–35% smaller than JPG at similar quality, with transparency support. Great for websites, but some older apps cannot open it.
Supported input formats
JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP, iPhone HEIC/HEIF, AVIF, BMP and GIF (the first frame). Files are recognised by their content, so a wrong extension is not a problem.
Image formats compared
Most of the confusion around image formats comes down to three questions: is the compression lossy, can the file hold transparency, and will the app on the other end open it? The table below answers those for the formats this converter reads.
| Format | Compression | Transparency | Opens in | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JPG / JPEG | Lossy | No | Practically everything | Photos, uploads, email, printing |
| PNG | Lossless | Yes | Practically everything | Screenshots, logos, graphics with text |
| WebP | Lossy or lossless | Yes | Browsers and most current apps; some older editors and forms refuse it | Images on websites |
| HEIC / HEIF | Lossy | Possible, rarely used | Apple devices; Windows often needs an extra extension | iPhone and iPad camera photos |
| AVIF | Lossy or lossless | Yes | Recent browsers; support in desktop apps is patchy | Newer websites |
| GIF | Lossless, but only 256 colours | On/off only | Everything | Short animations, simple graphics |
| BMP | Usually none | Rarely | Windows, most editors | Old software, raw screen captures |
This tool can read all seven formats, but it saves only the three that are safe to share: JPG, PNG and WebP. HEIC, AVIF, GIF and BMP are treated as input formats.
What happens to your image during conversion
Each file is decoded by your browser (or, for HEIC, by a decoder that loads the first time you need it), drawn at its original size, and saved again in the format you picked. Nothing is resized or cropped. If you need a smaller pixel size, use the image resizer afterwards; if you need a smaller file, the image compressor can aim at a target size in KB.
- Rotation is fixed. Phone photos often store “turn me 90°” as a note in the file instead of rotating the pixels. The converter applies that note, so the saved image is upright everywhere — even in apps that ignore it.
- Hidden metadata is dropped. The new file is written from the pixels alone, so camera details, date and GPS location stored in the original are not copied. That is useful before posting photos publicly; keep the original if you need that information.
- Animation is not kept. For animated GIF or WebP, only the first frame is saved.
- Settings apply live. If you switch the output format or move the quality slider after adding files, everything is converted again with the new setting.
A quick way to decide
- Someone asked for “a JPEG” or the upload form lists only JPG → JPG.
- There is text, a chart or a transparent background → PNG.
- You are putting images on your own website and want them light → WebP.
- You are not sure → JPG at the default quality. It is the format least likely to cause a problem.
Frequently asked questions
Is this image converter free?
Yes. No sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of images.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Conversion runs in your browser on your own device, so private photos stay private.
Will I lose quality?
Converting to PNG keeps every pixel. JPG and WebP are compressed; at the default quality of 92 the difference is not visible.
Does it keep transparent backgrounds?
PNG and WebP keep transparency. JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas become white.
Why can’t I save WebP on my iPhone?
Some versions of Safari can open WebP but cannot create it. If you see that message, choose JPG or PNG, or use Chrome or Edge on a computer.
Can I convert files of different formats in one go?
Yes. Drop a mix of HEIC, PNG, WebP, GIF and so on; they are all saved in the one output format you choose.
Why does the downloaded file end in “-converted”?
If the output has the same extension as the original (for example a JPG saved again as JPG to lower its quality), “-converted” is added so you never overwrite the original by accident.
Can I convert to HEIC or AVIF?
No. Browsers cannot reliably create these formats, and few people need them as output. Use JPG for compatibility or WebP for small web images.
